Healthy homemade electrolyte drink, better for you than Gatorade

Hydration, a super basic habit we all need to employ so we can enjoy vibrant health. The first sign of dehydration is fatigue. And no, I'm not talking about just plain water.

Please go check out my podcast episode where I might have ranted a bit about proper hydration in a persuasive yet big picture overview way like I tend to do.

It's episode #34; 'The Essential Habit You Need To Increase Energy' and you can listen HERE.

Summer time is often when most people start to pay more attention to their hydration, because the sun and heat take it out of you. The problem is, most people are not getting sufficient minerals (electrolytes) to deeply hydrated cells, tissues and organs.

So, I decided to make it super easy for you and created a homemade electrolyte recipe that is a replacement for Gatorade. We all know about Gatorade, right? We don't want the artificial colorings, preservatives, sugars and poor mineral forms from Gatorade. So, it's best to make our own. It's also cheaper by the way.

Y’all this is so easy and most people will have all the ingredients on hand.

Our cells swim in an ocean like solution, our sweat and tears are salty : so are we.

We lose minerals every day so we have to replace them. Like I always say; you gotta replete, what you deplete.

Here’s my very simple homemade electrolyte recipe for you to try:

Makes approximately 1 quart

  • 3-4 cups spring or filtered water
  • Juice of one lemon (or go halfsies with lime) *optional
  • ¼ - ½ tsp good quality sea salt (celtic is great)*to your taste preference
  • ½ - 2 tsp of Pico Potassium [HERE ]
  • 3-4 tsp of local honey, maple syrup or molasses or green leaf stevia *optional

Add to the jar and shake well. If using the honey, you can dissolve the honey and salt in a bit of hot water first, then add the remaining ingredients. The juice and honey is optional, it’s included in the recipe if you wish to have it taste more like lemon/lime gatorade. Some people don’t initially like the mineral taste, some do.

Adults: Start with ⅛ to ¼  tsp salt and ½ tsp pico potassium  in a quart of water every morning - work up to 2 tsp of Pico potassium per quart slowly over time if you are having a hard time getting enough dietary potassium daily.

Kids can drink this as well just go by half their weight in ounces per day of water and include this as part of their daily water consumption.

You could even use weak (a shorter steep time or diluted 50-50 with water)  nettles or oatstraw (or other herbal/plant) infusions as your water base to get even more minerals. That would be a better balance of minerals too -as no spring water is typically *high* in potassium, showing we would have mostly gotten it in our food.

You could also turn this recipe into popsicles for the kiddos.

Most people don't eat enough salt or potassium in their daily diet and that doesn't pan out well when you lose those minerals faster and in larger amounts through sweating.

Sodium is extra cellular and potassium is intracellular -when both are replete, your cells can signal properly and you have optimal energy and function.

If you’re interested in the pico potassium -you can order it HERE and use code: LYDIASHATNEY to save 10%.  I like it better than cream of tartar for longer term use and to more depleted restore potassium levels -it's the best form there is.

If you like this recipe, let me know in the comments - I love hearing from you.
