I'm about four months away from officially reaching menopause. I haven't had a cycle since December. And while everyone seems to be talking about hot flashes and night sweats, that hasn't really been my experience.
What I've been noticing instead is the condition of my tissues.
My body feels tighter. More guarded. Less resilient than it used to. Not necessarily painful — just different. Like my body has shifted into a different tissue state altogether.
Once I started researching it, I realized this is something an awful lot of women are experiencing during the menopausal transition. And almost nobody is explaining it in a way that actually makes sense.
So that's what this episode is about.
It's not just hormones
Yes, estradiol is changing. And that matters — because estradiol isn't just involved in reproduction. It also helps regulate collagen turnover, tissue hydration, blood flow, connective tissue remodeling, inflammatory signaling, and the behavior of the cells responsible for building and maintaining our connective tissue.
But here's the question I couldn't stop thinking about. If this transition is a normal part of a woman's life, why does it affect women so differently? Why does one woman move through it with relatively few changes, while another suddenly feels stiff, tight, guarded, and like she's living in a completely different body?
I don't think the answer is found by looking at hormones in isolation.
I think we also have to ask about the condition of the body those hormones are communicating with. The quality of the connective tissue. The health of the fascia. What's happening with the gut, the microbiome, the mineral reserves, and the nervous system.
Because none of those systems operate independently. They're constantly communicating with one another, adapting to one another, and responding to the conditions they've been living in for years — sometimes decades.
Hormones don't just change the body. Sometimes they reveal it.
As one of the body's major regulatory signals begins to shift, it can expose places where the body has quietly been compensating for years. Not because something suddenly broke — but because the conditions changed and the previous season's adaptations became more visible.
I don't believe every woman enters this transition from the same starting line. Some are entering it with tremendous reserves. Others have spent decades adapting to stress, poor sleep, digestive dysfunction, nutrient depletion, chronic inflammation, caregiving, and the relentless pace of modern life.
The hormonal transition doesn't erase those adaptations. Sometimes it just shines a brighter light on them.
The building materials matter
Our tissues are not static. They're constantly breaking down, repairing, remodeling, and rebuilding — every single day. And that rebuilding depends on having the raw materials available to do the work.
Minerals play a direct role in keeping connective tissue pliable, resilient, and capable of remodeling. When reserves are low — when the body has been burning through them faster than it's been replacing them — the tissues lose some of their capacity to repair and renew the way they're designed to. And when estradiol, which has also been supporting some of those same tissue-maintenance processes, begins to decline, the gap between what the body needs and what it has available becomes harder to ignore.
This is one of the reasons I love looking at Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis during this season of a woman's life. Not because it tells me what supplement to take. But because it gives me a window into how the body has been adapting, where reserves are genuinely low, and what the tissue environment actually looks like beneath the symptoms.
The gut and microbiome piece nobody is talking about
We can eat the most nutrient-dense diet in the world. But those raw materials only matter if the body can actually access them. And that's where the gut and the microbiome become central — not just as digestive organs, but as active participants in tissue health.
There's emerging research on the gut-fascia relationship — the idea that when the gut microbiome is dysbiotic or the gut barrier is compromised, it drives systemic low-grade inflammation that directly affects fascial tissue. That chronic inflammatory signaling contributes to the widespread stiffness and loss of resilience that so many women describe during this transition and can't quite explain.
There's also the estrobolome — a subset of gut bacteria that help metabolize and recirculate estrogen in the body. When this microbial community is disrupted, it affects how estrogen is processed and cleared, adding another layer of complexity to an already shifting hormonal picture.
And the microbiome influences neurotransmitter production — including GABA, the calming signal that helps the nervous system stand down and the tissues do the same. A gut community that's not producing enough of those calming signals means a nervous system that stays more activated, more guarded, and tissues that reflect that.
Earlier this year I ran my own microbiome panel and it helped me connect some important dots about my own tissue picture — not all of them, but enough to understand that this isn't just a hormone story. It's an ecosystem story.

What this means for you
The menopausal transition isn't happening in isolation. It's happening within the ecosystem of a body that has been adapting to your life for decades.
And I think that's actually hopeful.
Because while we can't stop the biological transition itself, we can absolutely influence the conditions under which it unfolds. We can support the gut. Nourish the microbiome. Restore mineral reserves. Build muscle. Improve sleep. Help calm an overworked nervous system.
None of those things stop menopause. But together, they create a body that's more adaptable — and a transition that doesn't have to feel like losing yourself in a body you no longer recognize.
