8 Signs You May Have Leaky Gut

One of the keys to recovering from burnout includes healing your gut. When I say, healing your gut, I'm referring primarily to your small intestines. However, your entire GI tract and digestive system all work together, heal together and fall apart together. That shared, your GUT impacts your entire human system. No part of you works in isolation, ever.

Leaky gut is when the integrity of your small intestine lining is impaired and becomes permeable. This permeability allows the contents in your small intestines to leak into your bloodstream and cause a reaction by your body. Your body sees this leakage as a foreign invader and mounts an inflammatory response (or attack). It can be slow and subtle until it's not. That's when your symptoms may get louder and more obvious to you.

I shared 8 signs you may have leaky gut in an IGTV video (HERE). If you learn better from conversations than you do from reading, head on over and check it out. There's a lot more in the video than what I'll share here.

8 Signs You May Have Leaky Gut

1. Food Sensitivities
Where certain foods cause your body to have an inflammatory response to the food. Not everyone is aware they have food sensitivities because the symptoms don't make sense or aren't severe enough to warrant investigation into foods being the culprit.
The top foods many people struggle with include: wheat/gluten, dairy, corn, eggs, nuts and soy.

2. Mood Issues
No medication will fix the mood issues related to leaky gut. You have to begin to repair the gut integrity. These toxin released into your blood stream because your gut leaks trigger inflammatory proteins called cytokines. Cytokines change the production and transmission of neurotransmitters responsible for your mood. This can lead to negative emotions, poor mood and even fatigue.
Mood issues that stem from leaky gut include; brain fog, depression, anxiety, mood swings

3. Fatigue
Most people do not make the connection to their gut and the fatigue they are dealing with. However, if you can absorb your nutrition fully due to a damaged gut you will lose energy. In addition, to have to create more energy to mount an inflammatory response to the toxins leaking into your blood stream.

4. Mal-absorption
This is what leaky gut basically is and it can show up in a lot of ways. Such as, diarrhea, flatulence, bloating, distention, unexplained weight loss (due to not absorbing your nutrition), cramping or abdomen pain.

5. Autoimmune disease
Leaky gut is one of the preconditions for developing an an autoimmune disease. It's a fast track leaving you wide open to things like; hashimotos, celiac, fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis. If those are things you are dealing with and no one ever suggested healing your gut, start there.

6. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Crohns, Ulcerative colitis, IBS are all inflammatory conditions with leaky gut at the root. When your small intestines don't function properly this can create havoc in the large bowel as well and impact your colon and your bowel movements.

7. Inflammatory Skin Conditions
Again, everything in your body is connected to everything else. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and it will flare up when the inside of you is impaired. Your gut being a key place. In the case of an inflammatory skin issue, when topical creams and steroids do not resolve the problem look to your gut as well as your liver. I had the worst eczema on the planet that nothing helped until I healed my gut and recovered from burnout. Basically, I helped my entire system/body to be rebuilt and repaired so my body would stop REACTING so badly in a myriad of ways.

8. Allergies and Asthma
This may not be as obvious but allergies are a clear sign you have a gut issue. Environmental triggers for both allergies and asthma are histamine responses or reactions.  When you develop leaky gut your body creates excessive histamine levels in their brain. Histamine is released from mast cells every time an antibody attacks protein that leaks from the gut into the bloodstream.
